One of the oldest stories will be given a fresh new telling later this month.
’The Accountment of Luke’, a one-man play staged at the Erin Arts Centre on Sunday, March 18, will present a new look at the life and the last days of Jesus, as told by Luke, one of the disciples.
The show is produced, directed and performed by actor James Hyland, through the Brother Wolf theatre company, and promises to give a different take on the life of Jesus through the eyes of one of the most divisive and enigmatic of biblical figures.
’It is often thought that Luke wrote his version of the life of Jesus many years after his death, but this piece of work takes the approach that it was written at the same time that Jesus was alive,’ said James.
’What is presented is something that is a more grounded and realistic version of the last days of Jesus.
’It is presented as a representation of the times and a telling of the facts of the story, presented in the first person perspective.’
The show is usually presented as a recreation of the last supper scene, with some audience members invited to sit around a long table.
Each show is followed by a discussion session, where people are able to discuss aspects of the play.
James said he was approached to produce the play, after the writer, a professor of theology who wished to remain anonymous, saw his other works.
’I was approached by a Professor of Theology. He had seen some of my work, such as Fagin’s Last Hour, the Strange case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde and the Christmas Carol - as told by Jacob Marley (deceased), which I performed on the island last December.
’The professor, who wrote the story was not trying to ram ideas down people’s throats, and we made sure that there was no dogma involved in the script.
’Whatever is presented or highlighted in the show doesn’t take anything away from the idea of Jesus himself. It is a very earthy, matter-of-fact representation of how people lived at the time.’
Tickets for ’The Accountment of Luke’ are £15 for adults, £12 for over 60s and £2 for under 18s, and are available from the Erin Arts Centre box office or online through www.etickets.im/talismann
