A police duo have received numerous nominations for the Community Police Officer of the Year award for their ’tireless’ efforts.

Constables Patrick ’Paddy’ Moore and Mike Griffiths have been hailed as an ’extremely conscientious’ team by members of the public who entered them for the Isle of Man Newspapers’ award.

The officers jointly won the award last year after Ballakermeen High School and the Isle of Man Police Youth Cadets nominated them both.

This year, technology company PDMS nominated them based on the work they do with its First Point Community Portal.

The new scheme allows people with additional needs to sign up for free so they can store details about themselves that only emergency services will be able to access when needed.

PCs Griffiths and Moore have helped develop the portal and spread the word about the project.

They’ve led training sessions for the police, thereby going out of their way to support an initiative that they believe will save lives.

’Mike and Paddy have been instrumental to this project’, said PDMS’ managing director, Chris Gledhill.

’Their continued dedication has driven this project forward and means that members of our community will receive better help when they need it most.’

Kathryn Ellen Cawte from Douglas Town Centre Management, nominated the officers ’who work tirelessly for the community’.

She said: ’I believe they are both worthy of a nomination particularly because of a recent incident which happened just a few short weeks ago, when a young girl was the victim of an unprovoked and vicious attack.

’Having been a victim of bullying myself in the past, I know how important it is to have support from the police and I was anxious to know if this dreadful incident had been reported. Both of these officers were investigating the crime both in and out of working hours.’

She said she had found them to be ’two extremely conscientious, dedicated and empathetic police officers who go beyond their call of duty to serve the community’.

Ballakermeen High School student Morgan Meehan nominated them as she appreciated the help they have given her. She said: ’They also talk to the school about drugs and that is why I’ll never touch drugs.’

Other nominations came from Douglas residents Patricia Thompson who’s been helped by Paddy for over 10 years, plus Joseph Waterson and his partner Christopher Hattersley.

PC Moore, who has been in this role for five years, said: 'It’s easy to help people when they want to be helped. Schools come to us and we’ve seen the rewards from working with them.’

PC Griffiths, who’s been in the role with Paddy for more than six years, said: ’The Chief Constable has been a brilliant supporter. His support has allowed us to be community-focused and allowed our ideas to become schemes.

’Paddy and I enjoy working together. He has always had the community at the centre of his core. He’s always gone past the point of call.’
