Shoals of young dancers will transform the Gaiety Theatre stage in to an underwater world full of shimmying sea creatures this weekend.

The Laxey-based dance school Dancers Barre will hold their biannual dance spectacular, a show called ’Just Keep Swimming’, based on the famous Disney film Finding Nemo, on Saturday, February 16, with two shows at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.

The dance show will feature more than 50 young dancers, aged between four and 18 years old, who will tell the tale of the little clown fish, Nemo, who escapes from a fish tank and makes it back to his underwater home.

The show features 38 separate dance sequences, set to music, and according to Rachel Withington, the head and choreographer of the small dance school, they have had to be very creative to recreate the underwater scenes.

’We have essentially created a minimal stage set, and will be creating a backdrop using light projectors and also some of the features of the Gaiety Theatre, like their old grave trap,’ said Rachel.

’It has been challenging to bring the dances and scenes on stage, and to create the costumes which suggest fish and underwater sequences.

’At one point, the whole stage is made to look like a fish tank, and then in another we have to recreate a dentist’s surgery.’

Ten-year-old Penny Webster stars as Nemo, and the role of the absent-minded Dory is performed by Ealish Withington, 15, who trains as part of The Pointe Youth dance company in Manchester.

Other dancers include Ella Paul, 16, as Nemo’s father Marlin and Martha Done, 14 as the dentist.

’There will be a lot of different dances and techniques on display, with most centred around ballet-inspired moves, and also incorporating a lot of jazz, swing and contemporary dance moves and techniques,’ said Rachel.

’We have all dancing abilities, from our 18-year-olds, who are "on pointe" to some of our littlest girls who are wearing their first pair of ballet shoes.’

Dancers Barre is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and Just Keep Swimming is its 12th dance concert to date.
