The post office delivered 1,000 bouquets of flowers locally on Mother’s Day, along with a significant number which were dispatched off island.

Non-operational post office staff had to pitch in to help posties with the excess of flowers.

General manager Geoff Rickard said: ’With the bad weather delaying sailings and creating a freight backlog last week, we knew that this last weekend would be a challenge.

’However, thanks to the hard work and dedication of colleagues across the business, all of the flowers we received either from the UK or locally were delivered over Saturday and Sunday.

’Additionally, the many flowers despatched from our island to the UK arrived in time to connect with their scheduled deliveries.

’Sadly a very small number of boxed flowers had been received from the UK on Monday, which we made sure were delivered by Tuesday.’

Social distancing was maintained during the doorstop deliveries, and all postal staff were wearing PPE.
