Three people from the Isle of Man have been recognised in the New Year honours.
They are Angela Aire, for services to Breast Cancer Now Isle of Man and the wider community, Aileen Gelling, for services to the Isle of Man prison’s independent monitoring board and Julian Power for services to the Manx community.
Mrs Aire is to get an MBE.
She has been involved in Breast Cancer Now Isle of Man (and its predecessor, Breakthrough Breast Cancer) for more than 16 years.
She has been the chair, leading a group of volunteers, for the last 10 years.
uring this time, the charity has raised more than £500,000 through events including annual ’bra dashes#, Snaefell sleepover, and New Year Day dips.
Mrs Aire serves on the Isle of Man Council for Cancer Charities and supports the other two breast cancer charities on the island.
In addition, Angela actively supports many other charities including the Manx Youth Band, Robert Owen House, Manx Blind Welfare Society and the Pahar Trust, fundraising for construction of schools in remote areas of Nepal.
Mrs Gelling is also to get an MBE.
The Isle of Man prison’s independent monitoring board is a voluntary organisation with a statutory responsibility to satisfy itself as to the state of the prison, its administration and the treatment of offenders.
She has served on the board for more than 15 years, initially as a member and for the last nine years as its chair.
As part of the role, she has listened and talked to prisoners who otherwise would have had no visitors, and helps all those with literacy problems.
ï?·Mrs Gelling has helped those detainees with mental health problems to access suitable care, working closely with the Department of Home Affairs and the prison governor.
Mr Power is to receive a British Empire Medal.
He has been contributor to music in the Isle of Man for more than 40 years as a tTeacher, brass coach, choirmaster, church organist and accompanist.
For more than 25 years, he has accompanied brass players at the Young Musician of Mann competition and he has been the director of Music of the Isle of Man Choral Society for the last 10 years.
The Choral Society has grown under his leadership and now has more than 140 members.
