Motorists using the promenade will face even more disruption from tomorrow morning.

The Department of Infrastructure have announced that from 9.30am to 3.30pm everyday and potentially 6pm to 9pm two evenings a week there will be a three way traffic light system in operation at the bottom of Summer Hill.

The area affected initially will be Queen’s Promenade, Summerhill and Strathallan Crescent but the manually controlled lights will move southwards along the promenade as work progresses.

While work is progressing, the nearest bus stop drop off and pick up will be at Derby Castle for passengers travelling north and Marathon Terrace for those travelling south.

The intention of the rolling traffic lights is to allow the promenade to be tidied up in time for TT when a normal two lane traffic flow will be restored.

A large part of the promenade is the replacement of the horse tram lines which it had been suggested could be used for electric trams in the future.

Confirming this possibility, a DoI spokesman said: ’The new tram line infrastructure is capable of taking both MER and modern rolling stock should the department choose to introduce this facility in the future.’
