The Thriller in the Villa is to take place for the sixth year running.

People involved in the night of amateur boxing got together to promote the event, which will take place on October 2, this week.

The Villa Marina, Douglas, will host the annual battle between Douglas and Ramsey as boxers step into the ring.

Organiser Chris Mooney said: ’This year’s volunteers have continued to work and train non-stop. Most people had their own issues to deal with but kept training even during isolation, which is amazing.

’They have put in so much effort. Even now I watch them at every session in the gym getting themselves ready for what is set to be the biggest night of this year.

’We are working round the clock with some 15-plus staff and volunteers and more than 30 boxers. It just shows that despite what we have been through we can bounce back with something good.’

As well as raising thousands of pounds for charities including Hospice Isle of Man and Craig’s Heartstrong Foundation, whose funds have been hit by the virus, the night will also see Ramsey trying to reclaim its title having lost to Douglas for the first time in 2019.

Tim Eve, deputy chairman of the Knox group of companies, which is sponsoring the event, said: ’We have been impressed with how quickly the event organisers have managed to get the Thriller evening back on track after the interruption to their schedule caused by the coronavirus lockdown.

’Our director, Anthony Page, was delighted to be invited on Saturday to meet the boxers and everyone involved in what is turning out to be a terrific night.’

Suzanna Ogden, managing director of MAL whose company will be in the blue corner on the night with the Douglas team, said: ’There is a huge buzz now around this event which is a testament to Chris Mooney and his team of organisers.

’Along with the boxers, ring girls, charities and event organisers we were delighted to meet eight-year-old Dylan Walton who has achieved so much success recently in raising funds for Rebecca House.’
