A clock which has been a fixture of a Douglas street for more than 50 years is to be removed.
Councillors this week voted to remove the two sided clock on Victoria Street which was given to the authority in the 1960s.
The clock is currently between Barclays Bank and Oscar’s bar. When it was fitted, it was on the outer wall of the Isle of Man Bank, which had a branch there then.
However, following an inspection by clock makers, Smith of Derby the fabric of the clock has deteriorated to such a state that it is no longer economical to repair it.
Members of the council’s executive committee considered two options following that report, either to replace it at a cost of £3,600 or remove it.
The committee decided to remove the clock and investigate how much it will cost to put a plaque up saying there used to be a clock there.
Pictures on the iMuseum website show there had been a clock on the former Isle of Man Bank building for some time. According to the plaque on the wall underneath the clock, it was given to the council the by the Townswomen’s Guild in 1961.
Removing this clock leaves Douglas with two ’town clocks’, one at the Town Hall and the Jubilee Clock on Loch Promenade. The decision was supported unanimously in council with no discussion.
