One of the standout events of the island’s summer calendar, the World Championship Viking Longboat Races, took place in Peel on Saturday.
Held in Peel harbour since 1963, the large Viking style boats and heavy 3.3m oars make it a test of stamina for the 10-man (or woman) crews who compete in them on a timed lap around the harbour.
It has become so popular that several hundred competitors now take part, in teams made up from local companies, sports teams, and groups, some of whom have made a special journey to the island to compete. Some teams race for charity and others for a night at the pub.
This year about 70 teams entered on a day when the weather also played its part.
Organiser Jimmy Lee said: ’It was a hot day and a hard day because the wind came in halfway through and played havoc with some of the teams.’
The winners of the Men’s Race were Fargher Liftmen, whilst Midaur Minxes won the Ladies’ Race and Northern Young Farmers Mixed Team won the Mixed Race. The 2018 World Champions were Farghers Liftmen.
Mr Lee added: ’I would like to say a big thank you to RL360 for their continued support, to everyone who has helped on the day and to all who participated in the races.
’RL360 have donated, through the continued sponsorship with the races, about £50,000 to Manx charities.’
