The access to car parking in Noble’s Park during this year’s TT led to traffic problems which could have been resolved, according to Douglas councillors.

For the 2019 TT, the emergency services requested a new point of access to the park, with a section of the wall at the back of St Ninian’s church being knocked through to build a gate which was used as the exit point.

User of the car park entered the park by travelling along St Ninian’s Road, in past the pavilion, and up into the car park.

And to exit, they came through the hole in the wall, past the church, past St Ninian’s Court and back on St Ninian’s Road before turning down onto Dukes Road.

However, Councillor Ian Clague said the route ’did not work’ and that he had been contacted by a resident of St Ninian’s Court who told him the same.

Regeneration and community committee chairman Stephen Pitts agreed, saying ’the plans led to congestion on St Ninian’s Road’.

It was agreed that the council will not attempt to make any changes for the Festival of Motorcycling later this year. However, it will talk to the Department for Enterprise and the highways department of the Department of Infrastructure to review the direction of travel.

A DfE spokesman previously said: ’The exit was completed as a result of a request from the emergency services and local residents to improve the traffic flow in the area of St Ninian’s Road during TT and FoM. The aim was to improve access for the emergency services, stop traffic build up in St Ninian’s Road due to the two-way traffic at the park entrance, and also to better control visitors parking on the pavements leading up to the churches.’
