Passenger services have resumed on the Snaefell Mountain Railway for the 2019 season - just a week after an accident report into a potential catastrophic accident was released.
The line began operating on Tuesday with two trams that have been fitted with new failsafe brakes.
A report by the Health and Safety at Work Inspectorate into a runaway tram incident in August 2017 has been released following a Freedom of Information request by Isle of Man Newspapers.
It reveals that a tram, with 48 passengers on board, lost power to its brakes following the failure of a low pressure monitor switch, and travelled out of control down the mountain for 1.4km, reaching a speed over more than 44mph at the Bungalow crossing.
The crew were praised for radioing ahead to the stationmaster at Bungalow to switch on the crossing lights, and for finally being able to stop the tram using the manual brake and parking brake.
Last December, the Department of Infrastructure was fined £18,000 after admitting five health and safety breaches.
HSWI served an improvement notice on the DoI obliging it to fit ’fail to safe’ brakes on the trams before the start of this year’s season. Two trams have been fitted with updated braking systems so far with the others to follow.
