One of the oldest orchestras in the Isle of Man will be joined by a trio of international soloists for its gala concert this weekend.

The Isle of Man Symphony Orchestra will perform two pieces of music by Beethoven and Jean Sibelius at the Villa Marina on Sunday, December 1, from 2.30pm.

They will be joined by three guest musicians for the concert, including pianist Emma Abbate, American violinist Miriam Kramer and cellist Ewa Mizerska, from Poland, for a special, one-off performance of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto which is described as one of the famous composer’s most entertaining pieces of music.

’Beethoven’s Triple Concerto requires three soloists, and is rarely heard in the concert hall,’ said orchestra conductor Mauric Powell.

’The Isle of Man Symphony Orchestra’s Gala Concert features these two masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire, and we have engaged three wonderful soloists, each with an international reputation, to join us in the Royal Hall.’

Both Ewa and Emma have previously performed together in the Isle of Man for the Ramsey Music Society, in 2017 and Miriam, described as a ’violinist of superior natural talent’ is playing in the island for the first time.

’The awesome second symphony of Jean Sibelius, one of the most revered and performed orchestral works of the 20th century, has never been performed before by the Isle of Man Symphony Orchestra,’ continued Maurice.

’By turns lyrical, dramatic, enigmatic and with overpowering climaxes, Sibelius created a huge sound picture during which great waves of sound wash over all, leading to the appearance of one of the great themes in the entire symphonic repertoire.

’This is a "live" musical event not to be missed, and a rare opportunity to hear two amazing works not likely to be performed here again for some years.

’The orchestra extends the warmest invitation to our friends and supporters, and to new friends, in what will be the most spectacular start to the festive season imaginable.’

Tickets to the symphony orchestra’s gala concert are between £14.50 and £16 for adults, £12 and £13,50 for concessions and £5 for children, available from the Welcome Centre and the Villa Marina box office, on 600555, and online from villagaiety.com
