The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings.
Officers expect snow and ice plus coastal overtopping because of windy weather.
The forecast:
Bitterly cold today with strong to gale force easterly winds, just a few fast-moving scattered snow showers and bright or sunny intervals. Temperatures starting a few degrees below zero and only slowly rising to about 2 Celsius at best at low levels, but still freezing hard on the hills, and feeling much colder everywhere with a severe wind chill.
Very cold again tonight and tomorrow but mostly dry and slowly becoming a little less windy.
Mostly cloudy with a little sleet or rain developing at times over the weekend, with fresh or strong winds gradually moderating on Sunday and slowly becoming less cold.
