A local authority is seeking approval to borrow a total of £930,000 for improvements to a popular park.
Port Erin Commissioners want to create a new multi-use game area at Breagle Glen as well as construct a new workshop and improve car parking and lighting.
Commissioners clerk Jason Roberts said: ’The multi-use games area is effectively a refurbishment and upgrade of what is already there which is very tired.’
The borrowing petition for a total of £931,769 is to fund the resurfacing of the court with new rebound fencing around its perimeter.
There will be five-a-side football goals and basketball hoops at each end, with pitch markings for both sports.
It also includes a footpath from the cafe and restaurant up to the tennis courts and the multi-use games area.
The existing crazy golf course isn’t included in this scheme but will be retained.
There are also five tennis courts, three of them leased to Port Erin Tennis Club, that are not part of the project.
The sixth tennis court had been converted some time ago into a multi-game area and it is this which is the focus of the improvement works.
Port Erin Commissioners has applied to the Department of Infrastructure to borrow a sum not exceeding £56,404 to defray the costs of the new multi-use game area and improved access to the court at Breagle Glen. The money will be repaid over 10 years.
It has also applied to borrow up to £875,365 to defray the cost of the new workshop and improvements to the car parking and lighting. This will be repaid within a period of 60 years.
The games equipment will be supplied by UK-based Kompan which was also supplier for the revamp of Athol Park in the village.
Mr Roberts said: ’As soon as we can get approval from the DoI, it will be all systems go with work beginning fairly imminently this summer.’
Views on both proposals should be submitted to the DoI at the Sea Terminal no later than noon on Tuesday next week (July 14).
