A new water main is to be routed down through Noble’s Park, Douglas councillors have agreed.

Replacing the pipework, in its current position under Glencrutchery Road, could cause traffic chaos, whereas taking it through the park would be both less expensive and less disruptive.

Councillor Stephen Pitts, chairman of the regeneration and community committee, said as part of the agreement, Manx Utilities would repair the path running from Glencrutchery Road to the bandstand. The necessary connections and pipework for a new children’s water feature to be built in the park will also be provided free.

The first stage of the work starts immediately after the TT and should be finished in time for the council’s fun day in July. The second phase starts after the Manx Grand Prix and Classic TT in August. Each stage is to take two to three weeks.

A number of councillors voiced concern at possible damage to mature tree roots but Councillor Pitts said there had been detailed discussion with the council’s head of parks so this should not be a concern.
