Runners and walkers will take to the roads around Peel tomorrow (Sunday) for the annual Gordy Brew Western 10 road race and Julie Brew Memorial Walk.

The 10-mile event, organised by Western Athletics Club, has been a fixture on the island's athletics calendar since 1982 and will see competitors make their way through Patrick, St John's and the Switchback.

The Gordy Brew Western 10 will start at 10.15am, while the 10-mile memorial walk will get under way at 9.15am.

Registration will take place at Peel Market Place from 8.15am, with entries available on the morning.

Entry costs £10 for club-affiliated runners and £12 for unattached competitors. Runners must be aged 17 or over, while walkers must be at least 18.

Organisers are encouraging people to come along whether they are taking part or simply supporting from the roadside.

There will be finishers' medals, prizes for the top three in each race, age-category prizes and spot prizes, followed by a presentation and buffet at the Kelvin Dawson Hub.

The event also has a strong connection to the Brew family and the local community.

Julie Brew, from Crosby, died suddenly in 2008, aged 38, as a result of an undetected heart condition. The memorial walk was established in her memory.

Her father-in-law Gordon Brew, known as Gordy, was a founding member of Western Athletics Club alongside Dave Phillips and Brian Maddrell.

He dedicated more than 40 years to developing athletics on the island and also worked as a starter at athletics events in the UK and as a marksman at the Island Games.

One of his proudest sporting achievements was his involvement in the Commonwealth Games.

The family is also raising funds for Motive 8 Addiction Services, with sponsorship forms available from June Quirk or Doreen Brew.

Organisers have highlighted the importance of support for this year's event, with the rescheduled Tough Mucka also taking place tomorrow.

Whether running, walking or cheering competitors on from the roadside, people are being encouraged to head to Peel and support the long-running event.
