Mental health charity Isle Listen is presenting a report of the impact its support has been having in the island’s community, schools and workplaces.
At 6pm next Thursday (November 25) in the Manx Museum the charity will address government, business and community leaders.
The event follows on from the release of Isle Listen’s schools service evaluation report for the 2020/21 academic year, which it said showed that ’there remains a continued and growing need for greater mental wellbeing education, prevention and early intervention from early years through to higher education’.
It noted that the report highlights ’a continuing trend of the existence of a mental health stigma amongst males and their reluctance to talk and seek help’.
Via Isle Listen’s 1-to-1 schools Listening Service, (which had nearly 1,000 sessions during the 2020/21 academic year), just 24% were with males compared to 75% with females.
The report also found that for the first time, there were a number of young people identifying as ’other’ [when responding to what gender they are], which Isle Listen described as ’a positive recognition of the increasing awareness and discussion around gender’.
In the past (2020/21) academic year, the charity expanded its education services from just QEII High School and King William’s College, to all six secondary schools.
A spokesperson for the charity added: ’Positive outcomes for young people empower them and encourages further change, improves emotional resilience and unlocks their potential. The lasting impact is that young people, with greater capacity for learning and emotional resilience, have improved transitions into the workplace.’
Featured will be a key-note speech from Isle Listen’s Consultant Clinical Lead, Professor Robin Davidson, on the topic of ’Mental Health for the Next Generation of our Workforce’.
