Christmas is a month away and decorations have been going up across the island, with light switch-ons taking place in towns around the island.

So we asked people whether they thought it was too soon to be putting the trees and decorations up, and at what point they start to get into the festive mood.

Roseleen, 66 and Dave Smith, 67, from Laxey both said that ’anytime in November’ is too soon to be putting decorations up.

Dave said: ’I think it’s a children’s thing, and perhaps the children enjoy it, but personally - not before December.’

Roseleen agreed, adding: ’The younger the children are in the house, the earlier - but I still wouldn’t do it before December 1, absolutely not.

’It spoils it because the novelty’s worn off by Christmas, if you’ve had the tree up that long.’

They put their tree up about 10 days before Christmas, and take it down a week after.

They said they first get into the Christmas spirit when they go to the nativity, or the children’s concerts at school, which ’kick-starts it all’ for them.

Margaret Lawler, 65, Castletown, told us: We’re not putting up [many] decorations - well, I’ve got this tree, and I’ve got some lights in glass things’.

Asked if Christmas seems to be getting sooner, she said: ’Every year people complain Christmas is coming as soon as the summer holidays finish, don’t they?’

’My husband used to put up the decorations on the first Sunday [of December] which was very, very nice - but I’m not going to force him to do that anymore!’

Alison Graham, 37, Kirk Michael, said: ’I don’t put mine up till December, I think it’s too early to put them up in November.’

Nigel Rawlinson, 55, Peel, added: ’We do know people who put them up in early November, which I think is a little bit too soon, middle of December for me personally.’

Asked about whether Christmas seemed to be moving sooner, he said: ’When Christmas is out of the way, they’ll have Easter eggs in the shop windows.’

Alison added: ’It’s something for people to look forward to I suppose, isn’t it?’

When it comes to beginning to feel festive, she said that happens: ’When I see the first Coca-Cola advert.’

When we asked Cathryn Berry, 35, Peel, when was too soon to put up decorations, she said: ’It’s never too soon.

’And I love the Christmas tunes, keep them coming.

’I just really like it, I think it brings out the best in people - it lifts spirits.

’I think obviously it’s quite early this year because people don’t know what’s going to happen come December, but I think it’s lovely - and the lights coming on brings the community together, it changes people’s perspective and outlook a little bit.

’It gives people a bit of gratitude and [they can] enjoy family time, so I love it.’
