Curragh’s Wildlife Park has opened its newly revamped nature trail.

The trail opened to the public on June 17 after 18 months shut.

Kim Etherton, chair of the Supporters of the Curraghs Wildlife Park, felt it was in serious need of an update.

She said: ’There was a pathway through the area but its interpretation was very old and rather academic, so not easy for people to understand.

Kim thought it was important the trail was accessible.

She continued: ’We’ve thought of how to make it accessible to people who are not ecologists and we’ve improved the path so it’s accessible for buggies and wheelchair users.’

They have installed new activities for children, including recorded wildlife facts being sounded from a solar-powered bench and booklets with images to be uncovered, but there are also quieter activities to ensure the wildlife isn’t disturbed.

The area of wetland is of international importance and special scientific interest which means it is an example of a type of habitat not found widely across the island and it has rare characteristics.

Kim added: ’Hopefully this will add to the visitor experience.’
