A craft session and workshop will help encourage children to look after the feathered friends in your garden.

The Manx Wildlife Trust are holding a creative and informative afternoon at the Kirk Braddan Church hall, on Saturday, January 19, where children can get stuck in making energy-rich log feeders and apple treats for garden birds.

The session will also be looking at how you can improve your garden for birds and offer tips for identifying the ones which are likely to visit your garden.

The workshop will be led by Dawn Dickens, who says that birds feeders are a great way to help attract and support garden birds, and also to help them through the winter months, when food can be scarce.

’As the temperatures fall, food becomes harder for our wildlife to find, and they need it to keep their warmth especially on frosty nights,’ said Dawn. ’Some birds do have a layer of fat to get them through, but a blue tit has so little fat reserve that it will only see it through one cold night and then it needs to eat at least 10g of insects that day.

’And don’t forget to put out a bowl of water for the birds, we can be too busy feeding them and forget this vital resource.’

The workshops, which take place from 2pm, are open to all to get involved, and places can be reserved, priced £5.92, through the Manx Wildlife Trust Facebook page.
