Work on a new multi-use games area at Breagle Glen in Port Erin, costing more than £56,000 is due to begin next week.

Port Erin Commissioners revealed last summer its plans to upgrade one of the courts in the area, erecting new fencing around what would become a combined basketball court and five-a-side pitch.

There will also be a new footpath to improve access to the games area and leading to four of the area’s existing tennis courts.

The renovations were due to begin a year ago but due to the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions these were delayed.

Work will be carried out by Kompan UK, using island contractors EG Services for large elements of the project and is scheduled to be completed within around six weeks.

Port Erin Commissioners applied last year to the Department of Infrastructure to borrow a sum not exceeding £56,404 to be paid back within 10 years.

Chair of Port Erin Commissioners, Godfrey Egee commented: ’The board is pleased to see this project get underway after the unanticipated Covid delays of the past 15 months.

’The new MUGA (multi-use games area) further adds to the investments made by the board over the past few years into recreational facilities within Port Erin and alongside the improved access to the MUGA and four of the tennis courts, will also benefit wider users of Breagle Glen.’
