The work to build a cycling and walking link along the old railway line between Kirk Michael and Douglas is now evident.

The Department of Infrastructure is reinstating the former railway bridges at Glen Wyllin, Glen Mooar and across the main road near Ballaleece, St John’s, to provide a new link between Kirk Michael, Douglas and Peel.

The construction of the project is forecast to cost £1.3 million.

The initiative follows the recent completion of improvements to the Heritage Trail - the old railway line between Douglas and Peel which shut in 1968 - and will extend the route a further seven miles north from St John’s.

The design takes inspiration from the original bridges built to carry steam trains.

A steel frame will be clad in perforated metal sheets, allowing users to see out, while the deck will be constructed from composite material.

Our photograph here shows the work on the remains of the bridge at Glen Mooar.

The project is part of the government’s active travel strategy, which aims to encourage people to cycle, walk or run rather than use their cars - to both improve health and fitness and cut carbon emissions.
