Work to complete the much-delayed renovation of the flumes and leisure pool at the National Sports Centre in Douglas has restarted after being postponed earlier in the year.
Problems with the manufacture and installation of the new flumes have caused a lengthy delay to the multi-million pound project, which started in August 2017 and was meant to be completed by April 2019.
When the spiral staircase for the flume arrived it was found to have been damaged in transit and when installed the flume run-out clashed with the duct work.
The stair column’s tread sections didn’t fit properly, there were no landings and inner handrail and there was significant movement when standing at the top on the flume entry platform.
In November, an extra £227,000 was granted by Tynwald to fix the flume staircase and zero-depth children’s play area. The final cost of the project is now expected to be £4.2m.
A government statement revealing the resumption of work said: ’A specialist contractor is now working on the final phase of the project during which noise and disruption will be kept to a minimum with some work being carried out at night.
’The project may require some temporary pool hall closures and these will be communicated to the public in advance.’
Minister for Education, Sport and Culture Dr Alex Allinson added: ’I apologise for the delays in completing this project, but we now have specialist contractors in the island, and we are working with them, and other contractors to complete this final phase as soon as possible.’
