With 2020 making its introduction, the promises of putting away the chocolate, going to the gym more regularly and working towards better habits also come along.

We all know the drill when it comes to New Year’s resolutions - you start something with good intentions and usually give up on after a few weeks. Right?

We went to Strand Street in Douglas to ask shoppers whether they’ve managed to stick to their resolutions at the beginning of the year.

’I’ve kept to mine,’ said Simone Taylor-Green, 34, from Ramsey.

’We decided after a visit to see a friend in the Isle of Man that we would try a new adventure in 2019 and move here.

’ We’ve now been in the island for eight months!

’We’ve only ever lived in one place - Leicestershire.

’2019 has been a big year of learning new things. I had to learn how to drive and settle into a different place.

’Doing that all in one year has been a lot.

’As we’ve been doing the house up, we’ve not been enjoying the island, so our new resolution is for twice a month we go to a new place here as I’m sure there are a million great things we haven’t done in the island yet.’

The family is enjoying their life in the island away from the more hectic lifestyle in the UK.

Ross Taylor-Green, 34, added: ’Where we lived we would only see the sea twice a year.

’Now I can see it from the top floor everyday.’

Mrs Taylor-Green said: ’We went back to Leicestershire a week ago and I never thought of traffic before I went there. You come and you go *exhales*. You go to Strand Street and this is not madness. You know what you want, go in and get it, come out without any problem.’

Conor Till, 21, from Braddan, said he’s never kept to his New Year’s resolutions and won’t be trying again this year.

’My resolutions in the past were to try and get a six-pack and quit drinking. It lasted for about two weeks.

’It’s really hard because I’m a student and I play rugby,’ the geography student at the University of Hertfordshire said.

Douglas resident Martyn Kennish, 47, said: I’ve kept my New Year’s resolution, which was to never make another one and I never have!’

He believes if you’re going to give up something, ’don’t wait for a gimmicky date to do it’.

Gillian Cole, 59, from Onchan, said: ’I never do New Year’s resolutions because I never stick to them anyway!

’I live quite a healthy lifestyle, I don’t smoke and I exercise two to four times a week, but I do like some chocolate.

’You cannot live life without a bit!’

Dale Batty, 49, from Onchan, said he has never been able to stick to his resolutions in the past because he’s ’wayward’.

’This year, my resolutions are to be more faithful in my religious beliefs, read the Bible more, pray a lot more and be less opinionated.’ he said.

’I have an opinion on most things and I share my opinions!’

He’s tried to quit smoking ’several times’ and will continue to try, he said.

Mr Batty believes what will help people keep to their resolutions is to have family and friends ’encourage them rather than laugh and mock their failure’.
