Zachary Elliott continues to make his mark in the world of geography and has won a place on Team UK for iGeo (International Geography Olympiad) 2019 in Hong Kong.
The Castle Rushen High School student, who is 17, is one of just four students chosen to represent Britain at the event, which is the 16th to be held.
He was also on last year’s team at the event, held in Canada, which attracted 165 top geography students from over 40 countries.
After a series of challenges he came 23rd as the best young geographer and second in a written assessment in the world. He hopes to top that in Hong Kong and said he’s aiming even higher.
’As with last year, each team will undertake three practical and written tests, stretching our geographical knowledge and analytical skills,’ he said.
’It was such an amazing experience to compete at iGeo 2018 last year in Québec, and I’m absolutely thrilled to say that I have won a place.
’It was an honour to compete at iGeo last summer. I was absolutely ecstatic to win a Silver Medal, coming 2nd globally in the written paper, being placed 23rd overall. This year, I’m aiming for gold!’
First he must raise the funds to get him there and is seeking sponsorship.
’Each candidate needs to find £1,850 of sponsorship for the travel costs associated with iGeo. I very much hope that interested parties will consider donating to my crowdfunding page at justgiving.com/crowdfunding/zachary-igeo, or email me at [email protected] to help me compete on an international level, and continue my passion for geography.’
Zachary has been achieving accolades in the field of geography for several years. He won Outstanding Geography Student Award from Discover The World and the Geographical Association in 2015, winning a trip to Iceland. Now in his final year at school, he hopes to study geography at a top British university.
