Jamie McCanney recorded first and second place finishes in round five of the 2017 FIM EnduroGP World Championship in Greece last weekend.
He’d achieved his first senior GP win the previous weekend in Hungary when also clocking up a third place.
Successfully battling through temperatures approaching 40°C in Greece, the Outsiders Yamaha Official Enduro Team rider this time finished runner-up in the highly-competitive Enduro 2 class on day one.
The WR250F-mounted rider came back even stronger on day two to grab an emphatic victory in the class. Collecting valuable points Jamie has moved into second in the E2 championship standings.
’Victory on day two was great,’ said the 23-year-old. ’It brings to a close two very positive GPs for myself and the Outsiders Yamaha team.
’I had some small issues on day one and made a few mistakes, which knocked my confidence a little on the extreme test. But I was more than happy with how things have ended up on day two.
’Similar to Hungary there were only a few seconds between myself and Josep Garcia going into the final test on Sunday, and I managed to get the win.
’The enduro test was long, around 10 minutes, and I was able to push hard all the way to the finish. I’m so pleased that I have a bike that allows me to push hard and ride the way I’m comfortable riding.’
His brother Daniel endured a challenging weekend, finishing seventh both days.
He was unable to find a good rhythm early on during the first day, but on day two Danny put in some strong times on the extreme test including posting the second fastest time in his class on the final lap.
’It was a frustrating GP for me,’ said the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna rider. ’I didn’t start the first day fast enough and then I was pushing myself hard to be faster before I’d found a good rhythm.
’I didn’t feel comfortable until later in the day, which was too late to really improve my result.
’I felt good on Sunday and put in some good times on the extreme test. There are some positives I can take away from the GP but certainly not the results I was hoping for.’
The leading Enduro 2 championship standings after five rounds are: 1, Josep Garcia (KTM) 223pts; 2, Jamie McCanney (Yamaha) 211; 3, Eero Remes (TM) 199; 4, Pascal Rauchenecker (Husqvarna) 170; 5, Daniel McCanney (Husqvarna) 139.
l Round six of the world championship takes place in Castelo Branco, Portugal on July 20-23, after which Jamie’s Outsiders Yamaha Official Enduro Team will contest round three of the French Enduro Championship in Gye sur Seine on July 29-30.
