Joe Reid has won the senior British Indoor 800 metre championship in a slightly controversial final at Birmingham Arena on Sunday.

The race was led over the finish line by Jamie Webb of Liverpool Harriers, but he was subsequently disqualified for making contact with Guy Learmonth (Lasswade).

Based in Cardiff and coached by Matt Elias, 22-year-old Joe, from Port St Mary, was delighted, if not a little surprised with his success. ’Anything can happen indoors and that proved to be the case today,’ said Joe, post-race, on Facebook.

’I crossed the line second, but the athlete that crossed first was subsequently disqualified, meaning I was upgraded from silver to gold!’
