Not content with two golds under her belt, Manx swimmer Charlotte Atkinson went on to win a further two golds at the British Universities and Colleges Sport Nationals in Sheffield the weekend before last.

On the Saturday she competed in the 100m butterfly in a field of 59 competitors, swimming an impressive sub-one minute time in both the heats and final.

She led the final from the start and took gold in a time of 59.08 seconds, a time that places her an incredible sixth in the FINA world rankings this year.

Following on from this, Charlotte had a busy schedule ahead of her on the Sunday, racing in the 200m and 50m butterfly and the women’s mixed medley relay.

The Manx woman dominated the 200m fly from the start, her lead being such that the other competitors had no chance of catching her. She took gold in 2m 09.93s, almost four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, setting a new senior island record, a new BUCS record, securing an amazing second world ranking position of no. 4 this year.

With only a short rest period following the physically demanding 200m event, she then competed in the 50m fly in a field of 102 competitors.

In a fast and furious nail-biting final, that saw swimmers only hundreds of seconds apart in race times, Charlotte took gold in a time of 27.02s, setting another new senior island record.

To round off the day, Charlotte competed in the women’s mixed medley relay, swimming the butterfly leg and playing her part in Loughborough’s victory for her fourth gold in a fantastic weekend of racing.

This has been an incredible start to the long course season for Charlotte, which only got underway in January. Prior to this she competed in the Winter Short Course Nationals in Sheffield, where she took gold in the 200m butterfly in a time of 2m 07.21s, setting a new senior island record and a Loughborough Swimming record.

This was an impressive achievement, in view of the level of world class swimmers who have trained at Loughborough for many years.
