Core focus this weekend, and the only hockey league title remaining up for grabs, is PwC Women’s Division One where Bacchas Colts and Valkyrs B face off in a title decider.

Bacchas start with a two-point lead and a six-goal headstart on the goal difference. This means that anything short of a three-goal victory for Valkyrs will present the title to Bacchas.

Colts start the match as clear favourites to take the title and a combination of youth and experience should see them through. Ros Lynch is one of the leading scorers in the league and the experienced hands of Niamh Goddard will create chances down the right-hand side.

While designated as a Colts team, the Bacchas second string has found many of their players advanced to the first team as the season has progressed, leaving the name of the team as something of a misnomer - although the name means nothing anyway from a rules perspective.

Having started the season with eight straight wins, Bacchas had a narrow loss against Premier League team Castletown in the cup, before a surprise loss to Saracens bought them their only league loss.

Valkyrs B, on the other hand, have perhaps been the surprise package of the season with a plethora of goals scored throughout the season by league top goalscorer Steph Cottier and Emma Miller.

The match will be very close, but the requirement for three goals are enough to make Vikings favourites.

The only other matter to be decided in the leagues is the bottom of the Men’s Premier League where Bacchas B and Vikings B are on equal points with a differential of eight on the goal difference in favour of Bacchas.

It’s difficult to perceive results that lead to a switch of this extent, but of course a surprise victory for Vikings against a Valkyrs team with nothing to play for would settle in their favour.

At the top end of the Men’s Premier, Bacchas A need to overcome Vikings A to ensure they’ve not lost a game all season. Vikings lost to Ramsey midweek which takes away any potential title race.

Similarly, in the Women’s Premier Division, Vikings A will almost certainly complete another unbeaten season with an easy closing fixture against Harlequins.

The only other team likely to close out a season with a 100 per cent record will be Castletown A men’s who finish their title-winning run with a game against fifth-placed Valkyrs B.
