Key interest in the PwC Men’s Premier League this Saturday will be the Bacchas A versus Ramsey A match at the NSC.
Reigning champions Bacchas, for one reason or another, were struggling for numbers last week and only managed to put four past Vikings’ second string.
Ramsey, on the other hand, pulled off a storming and perhaps unexpected victory over Valkyrs. Can they do the same thing again against Bacchas?
A couple of years ago, this fixture would have been a double-figures win for Bacchas - it’s testament to how far Ramsey have come that we’re now considering them as a serious threat.
Elsewhere, Valkyrs will expect to make amends for last week and should have plenty of strength to overcome Bacchas B, while a club derby at Vikings is only likely to go one way.
Switching to the women’s top flight and Vikings versus Ramsey is the game to watch.
The latter seem to have developed an ability over the past few seasons to hold Vikings to narrow results, although it’s been several years since the Blacks dropped even a point.
Ramsey have introduced a few new members to the squad this year and it’ll be interesting to watch how they perform.
Other games in the division should be relatively one-sided - both Valkyrs and Bacchas should have enough strength across their entire squads to exploit weaker areas in the Castletown and Harlequins line-ups, although either could spring a surprise on a good day.
In the lower divisions, Castletown men will face one of their stronger opponents in Vikings C which may give us more of an impression of their relative strength than last week’s easy win over Bacchas Colts.
The latter team will hope for a slightly easier ride against Saracens, and while Saracens will start as favourites, Bacchas often prove to be their bogey team.
Men’s Division Two is likely to see a relatively easy win for divisional favourites Ramsey B, while Harlequins B start their campaign against a Bacchas C team in what is likely to be a close-fought match.
Match of the day in women’s Division One is likely to be Vikings B versus Bacchas Colts, both of whom started the season with strong wins last week.
The winner of this match will mark themselves out as favourites for the title.
Saracens and Ramsey B will both hope and expect to put their first points on the board, while Valkyrs B will be aiming to keep their 100 per cent record against Castletown B.
