The Manx 100 mountain bike race event attracted more than 80 local riders for the reduced 100 and 50-kilometre races on Sunday.

There was no 100-mile option this year, but 20 additional riders took part in the inaugural non-competitive sportive for e-bikes.

A beautiful dawn soon gave way to blustery heavy downpours of rain as the 100km riders got away from St Luke’s church at 9.30am.

The route took the riders northwards over the Millenium Way, down Druidale into Ballaugh forest onto the ’Great West’ and down Ballacobb.

A short loop on the flat brought riders back to Kirk Michael and up the steep Baltic Road climb to Slieau Dhoo, leading down to Brandywell Cottage.

Continuing on a segment of the End to End route, the fast and furious Glion Gill section was followed by the highly-technical Dowse descent.

The Slieau Whallian climb then threw the riders into the 50km course where they tackled Arrasey, the Pipeline, Glen Rushen, Eary Cushlin, Earystane, Cringle, Corlea and South Barrule, crossing over to Archallagan before the final climb up Ballacotch to the finish.

It was then a steady roll back to the Grandstand for a well-deserved Mexican beer.

Road cyclist Conor Davies, who rides on the Continent with the Saint Piran Cycling team, was immediately on the front and enjoying the climbing the event had to offer. But he remained pegged and under the watchful eyes of Chris Looney and Ben Corkill.

This was to maintain throughout the ride as Davies punctured and lost quite a few minutes before Looney also punctured and Corkill began to suffer with lower-back issues.

At the half-way point, less than two minutes covered the three leaders, with the field strung out behind. From the northern hills, the event then entered the southern section where singletrack was introduced into the mix.

This favoured Looney, but any climb would see Davies gaining time.

Ultimately the latter man took the win by 2min 13sec from Looney, with Corkill a further 20 minutes back. No females took part in the 100km event.

The Manx 50 was a furious race with less than 60 seconds covering the top three at the finish. Ross Thorley was unfortunate to have a blowout, but managed to carry on riding on his insert - albeit losing ground hand over fist to Nick Colburn and Mark Horsthuis.

Fortunately for him, Thorley had enough of a lead to hold off the chasing two riders as they crested Ballacotch and the finish.

Four women contested this event and enjoyed a great contest. Sacha Horsthuis and Kirree Quayle were duking it out until Horsthuis had a mechanical, leaving Quayle to take the win by five minutes from Emma Atkinson and Jo Hawkins.

The e-bike sportive was all about battery conservation, fitness and mountain bike technique on the course set by the Manx 100 team.

The organisers thank all that entered, Peter O’Shea for first aid cover, the motorbike sweep-up team, along with the support received from many government departments to get the event on and planned in such a short time period.
