Recording a time of 58min 14sec for what was his first attempt at the event, the talented Manx Harriers man finished very nearly five minutes ahead of runner-up Orran Smith.
The pair went off fast from the start on what is the dampest and muddiest stretch of the trail from Peel to St John’s.
Smith was on Corlett’s shoulder for the first couple of miles, but by St John’s (three miles), Corlett had edged 50 metres in front.
’The conditions weren’t too bad, just wet and cold,’ said Corlett. ’The problem was what footwear to use. I chose wrong for the first bit as it was very slippy underfoot and I was unable to put any pace down. Even the better parts were still a tad greasy, but better than just mud.’
While Corlett was 4m 47s clear of the runner-up at the close, there was a closer tussle for that second place between at least three men with Smith 20s ahead of fellow Western AC runner Richard Shipway. There was then another half-minute to Ian Goatman and Ben Corkill.
Fresh from medalling at the World Masters in Malaga, Gail Griffiths was the fastest female in a time of 1:13.57 for 16th place, but newlywed Ciara Hardisty (nee Kaneen) certainly didn’t keep anyone waiting when finishing less than one minute adrift in 18th place.
Helen Taylor and Rebecca Reynolds were only 16s apart in 24th and 25th places respectively in a large total field of 83 finishers.
The event was sponsored by Glen Helen Glamping.
