The most interesting cricket game of the bank holiday weekend should be Saturday’s clash between Crosby and Peel and St John’s at the Memorial Playing Fields.

I say, should, because too often these games have been a one-sided affair with Shimmin Wilson Peel and St John’s winning too easily.

Last season, Crosby were unable to get the same team out on a regular basis, especially against the top teams.

It is my opinion that the Hannan Law-sponsored side can win these types of games if their players choose to take the challenge.

PSJ’s Ollie Webster scored 79 last Sunday, so it will be important that the weekend’s hosts get him out early before he causes any damage.

Valkyres welcome CTH Insurance Ramsey to their new home at Mullen-e-Cloie.

Ramsey are one of the clubs in the island who are showing a revival by introducing new young players to cricket.

However, they suffered a heavy defeat in the Tinker Cup, when their inexperienced team faced a strong PSJ XI.

If a young Ramsey line-up takes to the pitch on Saturday, I am sure that the new Valkyres captain, Shahid Rafique, will adopt sensible tactics and set a reasonable target should he choose to bat first.

Valkyres have been showing good form pre-season so they should win this one.

Newfield Castletown welcome Ramsey Crookall Finch Hill to King William’s College.

Castletown are showing that the introduction of new ideas and commitment can attract new players, young and old.

Finch Hill have developed young players over a long time but the arrival of Jaco Jansen and his son Dollin to Town may just give their new club the edge.

George Burrows and Eddie Beard seem to have become veterans for the Finches, but if the latter’s younger brother Charlie can maintain his aggressive batting form from last Sunday, then the pair may have to up their game so that they don’t lose their star statuses.

Finally, the Callin Wild Development XI face Baker Tilly Cronkbourne on Sunday at King William’s College.

This young team will be bolstered by some older hands such as Mark Williams or Matthew Ansell.

The under-17 side performed well as a team against Valkyres in the Tinker Cup and there were some notable performances.

Charlie Beard scored a sparkling 50 and he was stylishly backed up by Sam Barnett and Josh Clough.

Carl Hartmann and Spencer Clarke batted with aggression.

Their weak point is the number of wides bowled, the young team bowling approximately 57.

A notable reduction in that number would have brought a closer end to the game.

I do hope that Cronkbourne put out a sensible 11, and their younger players get the chance to play against their contemporaries.

The Tromode side are a strong group of players, who deservedly won all the trophies last season.

I know that the match is being played at a senior level, but cricket depends on developing the young players from all clubs.

They require the opportunity to challenge themselves as individuals and as part of a team.

Cronkbourne though should win this one.
