There was a full schedule of senior games in the Isle of Man Basketball Association League at the NSC on Thursday as junior action went on hiatus for half-term.
The opening match of the night pitted PokerStars against Douglas Basketball Club. James Jia opened the scoring with a quick basket for Stars but Revi Del Rosario had a three-point reply for Douglas with a swish shot from downtown.
That was little consolation for Douglas though, as Dylan Coady scored a trio of baskets for the PokerStars team.
As the game progressed, Douglas found better form, tightening up their defence and converting on offence with fast breaks from Joe Narra and RB Gomez coupled with solid shooting from brothers Jim and Jei Manuel.
PokerStars struggled while Douglas broke away, baskets from Fraser Dametto and Coady doing little to close the gap.
A late run in the fourth quarter ended in a decisive win for Douglas, 86-38.
Man of the match went to PokerStars’ Fraser Dametto for his solid all-round performance.
The second match pitted a full-strength Turkeys team against a reduced Fun Guyz squad.
Turkeys were on form after a difficult game the previous week, starting out this match with quick three-pointers from Wig Bregazzi and Chris Wolfendale followed up by a rush of fast-break baskets.
Fun Guyz had some success in the mid-game with a succession of baskets from Marco Garmino and Amutyilani Hikwa.
Despite impressive chances, they struggled to find a consistent form and it was the current champions, Turkeys, who took the match 87-48. Player of the match was awarded to Sean Doyle of Turkeys whose pace and shooting form were unmatched.
The first of the two later games saw Hoops play Cavaliers. In the opening quarter, Hoops contained the strong inside threat of Cavs and, with the help of four points from Steven Mulhern, they were tied 8-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Hoops started the second period by scoring five unanswered points to take the lead. Cavs responded by calling a timeout, after which Dave Minay took control of the game scoring 15 points in the quarter to leave the score 29-21 in Cavs’ favour at the half-time break.
The third quarter saw Cavs continue to dominate the game inside the key and, with Minay adding another 14 points, they stretched the lead to 50-31 going into the fourth and final period.
The last period saw Cavs continue to control the game despite the best efforts of the Hoops team and they eventually ran out comfortable winners 68-45.
Leading the scoring for Cavs was Minay with a season-high of 35 points, while Becky Dunne and Nefeli Protogeraki with 19 and 10 points respectively led the scoring for Hoops.
Player of the match was awarded to Lauren Ellison of Hoops for strong defensive stopping.
The final game of the evening was between Wolves and Eagles. The former made a blistering start to open up a 13-4 lead, keeping pace to end the quarter leading 21-11 with the help of 10 points from Ross Wilson.
The second period continued in the same vein, with Wolves looking like they would run away with the game but Eagles responded with some strong defensive work and they ended the period with a run of 8-0 to leave them trailing by only five points 31-26 at half-time.
The third quarter saw Wolves regain their composure and, with Wilson dominating the game inside the key with strong moves to the basket, they led 52-38 entering the final quarter. The last period saw Wolves control the game and they ended the match with a 17-point winning margin 70-53.
Leading the scoring for Wolves were Sean Anthony with 26 and Wilson with 24, while Peter Boussougou with 13 and Jack Coates with 11 points led the Eagles scoring, the latter the man of the match for his strong defensive work and quick pace.
This Thursday evening sees the return of the Junior League from 6-8pm at the NSC. Open to all players in School Year 7 and above, players are led by qualified coaches and placed in teams for league matches each week. There is a £15 registration fee and new players are welcome.
The senior leagues will also be in action from 8pm, with Wolves playing Fun Guyz and Eagles taking on Microgaming Cavaliers.
Both matches take place at the NSC and free seating will be available courtside for any spectators who wish to attend.
