After a previous decade of St George’s dominance, Corinthians are equipped to be the next emerging and dominant force in Manx football.
The Whites registered an impressive 10-0 win over DHSOB in the Canada Life Premier League at a rain-soaked, windy Ballafletcher on Saturday afternoon.
Taking advantage of a number of postponements, Blane Slatter’s men are now 13 points ahead of their nearest title rivals, Rushen United.
It was a birthday to remember for Corinthians’ Stephen Whitley: a four-goal salvo including a second-half hat-trick, not forgetting his beloved Everton winning the Merseyside derby.
Old Boys created the first chance of the match - one of only three to go ahead on Saturday - Michael Booth driving a shot narrowly wide.
But it was the former Noble’s Park side, playing into the wind in the first half, that started to dominate the match with their quick passing and they duly took the lead after eight minutes.
Whitley was freed on the right and burst down the flank before passing inside for Sean Doyle to convert from close range.
Five minutes later, the Whites doubled their lead. Danny Simpson was involved in the move along the left and teed up Connor Gorman whose searching ball into the box picked out the onrushing Whitley who smashed home at the near post.
As the conditions started to deteriorate, the weather proved to be the toughest opponent for both sides and Corinthians had to wait until the 31st minute to find the target again.
Gorman again was the provider with a measured through-ball for Simpson who poked the ball past an onrushing Sam Halliday and into the net.
Just before half-time, after a spell of pressure inside and around the visiting box, Corinthians ended the half with a fourth, Whitley providing the through-ball for Doyle to stroke home.
After the break, Corinthians had the wind on their backs as the visitors rarely ventured outside their own half.
The Whites had to wait until after the hour mark to make it 5-0 when Whitley was again the architect, slipping a through-ball for Luke Murray who beat the offside trap for pace before picking his spot with an effort into the bottom right.
Whitley continued to take centre stage as the former St Mary’s man turned goalscorer for their sixth. Goalkeeper Matthew Quirk launched the ball and, after being collected on the left, the resulting cross was perfectly delivered to Whitley to place his shot into the bottom left.
Whitley completed his hat-trick two minutes later following a short corner when a cross was chested down by Phil Kelly who put the ball on a plate for the Corinthians’ number 10 to steer home from close range.
On 76 minutes it was 8-0 after a shot was parried and then blocked, before Gorman set up Whitley who side-stepped to the left and drilled home a low shot into the bottom right.
The goals kept flowing and the Whites’ ninth of the afternoon was registered after 86 minutes when Whitley’s corner was met by Simpson who smashed a low shot into the bottom corner.
The rout was completed on 90 minutes as Corinthians duly reached double figures when Whitley’s shot was parried by the goalkeeper and Josh Ridings capitalised by sliding home the rebound to score the Whites’ 100th league goal of the season.
This is their second biggest win of the campaign and the fourth time they have reached double figures - Corinthians’ relentless march towards the title continues.
