Manx footballer Adam Long has signed an extension to his professional contract with parent club Wigan Athletic.

The former St George’s and Union Mills defender joined Notts County on an initial one-month loan from Wigan in February, having signed with the Latics in 2017-18.

The 19-year-old quickly repaid manager Neil Ardley’s faith in him by netting a dramatic late winner for the Magpies in their clash with Fylde at the beginning of March.

Unfortunately, the action was soon halted as the English FA declared the season null and void for all divisions in the National League and below, including the local Isle of Man leagues.

However, the final outcome of the league has not yet been confirmed after clubs appealed the cancellation of the season, one of which was Notts County who were lying in a play-off place at the time.

Speaking to the Examiner last week, Long said he was pleased with how his 2019-20 season unfolded, despite the truncated nature of the campaign.

’I’m delighted to be offered another contract at Wigan. For next season, we aren’t sure what’s going on yet with the current situation but whatever happens I’m looking forward to it.

’I’ve been enjoying my time down at Notts County very much. It’s been a good step up for me and I think I’ve done well, the highlight being my goal at Fylde.

’I feel that this season has been good for me, with the team heading up into category two to play better teams than category three.

’Obviously we’d all love the season to continue but with everything going on at the minute, I think it’s safer for everyone that it’s been put off to help slow down and hopefully stop the spread.

’Life in lockdown at the minute just consists of a lot of (computer game) FIFA and trying to keep fit - we’ve been given programmes to help that with running and gym work.

’Hopefully when this blows over we’ll be able to get into next season but only when it’s safe to do so.’

Long is, of course, at the beginning of his football career, but could he see himself donning a Manx shirt in future?

’I’m glad that the FC Isle of Man is getting set-up - I think it’s a big step forward for Manx football and I can never rule out not playing for them in the future.’
