The formation of an Isle of Man Walking Football Association is being considered following the success of a tournament at the Bowl last Thursday.
The event - in which four seven-a-side teams took part - boosted the number of registered walking footballers on the island from 20 to 45.
The winners of the Vannin Travel- sponsored silverware were All For One - all Everton supporters whose ages ranged from 55 to 71.
Walking football, one of the UK’s fastest-growing sports, is typically open to men and women over the age of 50 - but the minimum age in the Isle of Man is 40.
The game was invented in Chesterfield in 2011 with the aim of encouraging older people to get or stay fit by playing football at a slower pace to reduce the risk of injury.
Pete Nash, co-organiser of the tournament, said: ’We were delighted to see so many people came along on Thursday to try the game for themselves.
’They had a great afternoon and many people were surprised by the fast pace, even though running is banned.
’Walking football is not only great fun but the NHS recommends it as an important way of boosting and maintaining physical and mental health as people get older.
’The enjoyment people get from playing it is the same as when they played in their earlier years.
’But it isn’t necessary to have been a great footballer - the game can be enjoyed by people of any skill level.’
Isle of Man Newspapers were among the sides taking part last week. Sports reporter/goalkeeper Andy Dalrymple added: ’It’s a really great way to keep people involved with the game and very enjoyable.
’Despite what the name suggests, it’s hard work and keenly contested.
’Hopefully a few more people will give it a go.’
The next phase for the game in the Isle of Man is to form teams from all parts of the island, with the intention of playing regular friendlies.
Ultimately, an island-wide league could be created - and even a Manx team to compete in international tournaments.
Anyone interested in trying walking football should contact Nash on 335666. Or simply turn up at one of the IoMFA’s weekly indoor sessions at the NSC on Thursdays at midday.
