The big games continue to come thick and fast in the Canada Life Premier League, with another two heavyweight clashes taking place this Saturday.
After St George’s defeated Rushen 3-1 last week, the Saints will be hoping to make it six wins from six games when they travel west to take on old foes Peel at Douglas Road. Steve Falconer’s hosts let an early lead slip when they lost heavily at rivals St Mary’s last time out and they will know that - with only two wins from their opening five games of the season - they can really ill afford many more slip-ups if they’re to realistically challenge for the Premier League title.
Geordies won the corresponding fixture 3-2 last season and will start this weekend’s game as favourites, but any side containing the extremely talented triumvirate of Lee Gale, Rhys Oates and Dan Simpson should not be discounted.
An equally intriguing game in on the cards on the opposite side of the island when in-form Laxey host defending champions St Mary’s at Glen Road. The latter side currently top the standings with five wins from six games, including last weekend’s impressive 5-1 win over Peel, while the Miners have been this season’s surprise package and sit third only two points off the leaders.
St Mary’s did the double over Laxey last season, including a 6-0 demolition when the sides last met in April, but this game promises to be a completely different proposition this time around and no team will fancy going to Glen Road at the moment.
The other two matches in the Premier League see Douglas Athletic travel to Rushen United while Marown host DHSOB. Both the Spaniards and DAFC lost last time out to Geordies and Douglas Royal respectively and, while both will be desperate to bounce back, Rushen should prove too strong for the Pinks.
Marown claimed their first win of the season against Pulrose last week and may also just edge past Old Boys.
The Ballafletcher derby between Douglas Royal and Corinthians has been postponed as a result of player involvement in the FA County Youth Cup clash between the Isle of Man and Cheshire League on Sunday.
l Don’t forget that all of Saturday’s league fixtures kick off at the earlier time of 2pm.
