Corinthians and St Mary’s will lock horns in the final of this season’s Junior Cup at the Bowl this Saturday afternoon.
Newly-crowned Combination One champions St Mary’s go into the match as marginal favourites to complete a league and cup double in what has been a memorable season for everyone involved in the club.
Corinthians ultimately finished third some six points behind the Saints in the Combi One table, but they will go into the final in confident mood having won their last five games in a row.
Both league meetings between the pair have been high-scoring affairs this season, with Mary’s winning 6-4 at the Bowl in September before edging a nine-goal thriller in the reverse at Ballafletcher in December.
The Whites’ route to the final has seen them record victories over Pulrose, Douglas Royal, Douglas and District, and Union Mills.
Conversely, the Saints’ passage to this weekend’s final has been anything but straightforward as they have gone up against rivals Peel, Rushen United, cup holders DHSOB and St George’s.
Their result against Old Boys in particular stood out, hammering the defending champions 16-2 in ruthless fashion at the national stadium.
Luke Booth scored five goals during that rout and he has been a revelation since joining from Union Mills during the season, so all eyes will be on him to see if he can fire them to more glory.
Adam McCullough has been the main goal-getter for Corinthians during 2018-19, ably assisted by the likes of Ian Drake and Jordan Cowin, so there is certainly plenty of attacking talent in the Whites squad to cause St Mary’s a few problems in the final.
With more than 200 goals between them in the league alone this season, and with those two previous results in mind, expect plenty of goals in this one should the teams play to their potential.
St Mary’s won the competition two years ago and will desperate to add the silverware to their burgeoning trophy cabinet, while Corinthians lifted the cup back in 2013 when they defeated Peel 4-2 in the final.
Kick-off is a 2pm at the Bowl - full report and photographs from the final in next week’s Examiner.
l As a result of their involvement in the Junior Cup final, St Marys’ Hospital Cup semi-final clash with Foxdale has been switched to next week, as has the other semi between St George’s and promotion hopefuls Ramsey.
The ties had originally been scheduled to take place on separate days this weekend but have now been changed and will be played concurrently on Tuesday evening ahead of next Friday’s final at the Bowl.
