The ECAP FA Cup final takes centre stage on Saturday afternoon.
The 1pm kick-off pits St Mary’s against Railway Cup winners Corinthians at the Bowl.
These pair have only met once this season, Corinthians edging a narrow 1-0 win at Ballafletcher in October.
The Whites have had a good campaign thus far and currently lead the Canada Life Premier League standings by five points from rivals Peel with a handful of games left to play. They could, however, be yet pipped to the top-flight spoils by the westerners who have three games in hand on Ben Qualtrough’s outfit.
Nevertheless, Corinthians go into the weekend’s encounter in free-scoring form having put bottom side Foxdale to the sword 14-1 last weekend.
The attacking trio of Josh Ridings, Sean Doyle and Dan Simpson did much of the damage in that match, Ridings warming up for the weekend with a five-goal haul.
That match also saw a second-half cameo from former St George’s man (and Sean’s brother) Conor Doyle.
Qualtrough has a strong squad to pick from but is missing several big hitters. Luke Murray, Ronan McDonnell and Ash Higginbotham continue to be long-term absentees and will likely miss the rest of the season.
Beren Colley picked up a groin strain against Foxdale, while Joe Middleton has damaged his MCL for the second time this campaign so both miss out.
Other than that though, it’s as you were in the Whites squad. Matty Quirk will don the goalkeeper’s jersey for the 24th time this season, and ahead of him the likes of Stewart Smith, Darren Cain, Ryan Burns, Joao Marques, Sean Doyle, Morgan Naylor, Ridings, Simpson and Connor Clark will all be in the mix.
Lucas Corran made his debut against Foxdale last week and could make the bench, as could Calum Taylor.
St Mary’s also head into this match in buoyant mood after stringing together a run of eight wins in a row, stretching back to mid-November.
Manager Alex Harrison has a strong squad to choose from, ranging from the likes of the experienced quartet of Jack McVey, Johnny Myers, Jamie Skillen and Mark Wolfenden to Tyrese Thompson and Joe Bergquist who are among the side’s leading goalscorers.
Led by respective goalkeepers Quirk and Ben Wilkinson, both sides boast some of the tightest defence in the top flight meaning the attacking strength of Corinthians, who have averaged more than four goals a game in the league this season, might just give them the edge.
- Report and photos from the FA Cup and Woods Cup finals will appear in next week’s Isle of Man Examiner, on sale Tuesday.
A preview of the Woods Cup final appears elsewhere on this site.
