Several Division Two stars earned their places in the latest Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week FA Cup special.
Stealing the headlines last weekend was Colby who stunned Premier League opponents Douglas Athletic 1-0 at the Station Fields.
Therefore, it’s no surprise to see two of their number earning places in the latest hypothetical XI, starting with goalkeeper Matthew Cregeen who edged St Mary’s No1 Sam Holliday to the TotW gloves.
The Colby shot-stopper - who was a guest on last week’s Manx Footy Podcast - was in inspired form for the Moonlighters as he produced several impressive saves to keep a clean sheet against top flight opposition.
Slotting into a four-man defence in front of Cregeen are two more second division stars, namely Foxdale’s Will Penhallurick and Ayre United’s Orry Martin.
Penhallurick was in excellent form for his side as the Billy Goat Park outfit threatened Premier League heavyweights Rushen United, constantly thwarting the Spaniards and restricting them to a 3-0 victory.
Likewise, Martin was Ayre’s star performer as the Tangerines battled bravely against Premier League champions St Mary’s, frustrating the Bowl outfit as the Division Two promotion hopefuls made the Saints work hard for their 3-1 victory.
Taking the man of the match honours in that game in Andreas was St Mary’s centre-back Karl Clark who had to be at his best to stem the Ayre tide in the second half and duly completes the Team of the Week back four alongside Sam Kennaugh. The latter was one of Peel’s brightest sparks with a fine showing at full-back as the Sunset City side claimed a 6-2 victory over Div Two outfit Onchan at the Nivison Stadium.
The other second division player to make it into the latest TotW selection is Colby’s Jordan Edge who earns his place in a traditional four-man midfield.
Edge was another of the Moonlighters’ star performers as the Station Roads outfit pulled off a ’cupset’ to get the better of Douglas Athletic in the south of the island.
Also impressing Eric Clague’s player ratings panel in that match was DAFC’s Martin Cowan who, despite being on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline, stood out for the Pinks to earn his place in Team of the Week.
Matt Lamb was one of Rushen United’s star turns as he helped the Spaniards record that aforementioned victory at Billy Goat Park, looking lively throughout and setting up two of his side’s three goals.
Completing the midfield quartet is Ramsey talent Wael Mohammed (pictured) who delivered a man of the match showing for the northerners during their impressive 2-1 victory over DHSOB at Ballacloan Stadium.
Rushen’s win over Foxdale was largely down to the industriousness and clinical finishing of Greg Norris whose fine maiden season in Manx football continued with a brace at Billy Goat Park.
That feat was replicated by Peel star Dan Simpson who bagged a couple of goals as the westerners put second division side Onchan to the sword 6-2 at the Nivison Stadium, therefore the duo line up in attack in the latest Team of the Week.
Claiming the refereeing honours is Peter Greenhill who was in fine form with the whistle during the latter clash between Onchan and Peel at the spiritual home of local stockcar racing.
