Liam Doyle is enjoying a run of games for Swope Park Rangers having broken into the team in recent weeks.

The former St George’s and St Mary’s player signed for the Kansas-based USL side in December following a successful season with the Harrisburg City Islanders in Pennsylvania.

Beaten finalists in last season’s USL Cup, Rangers are affiliated to Major League Soccer side Sporting Kansas City and play their home games at Children’s Mercy Victory Field.

Doyle’s new side won their opening three games of the season but have since struggled for consistency and currently lie ninth in the table, although the Manxman helped his team claim an impressive point against high-flying unbeaten San Antonio at the weekend.

The former Isle of Man cap has forced his way into contention after impressing in training and believes that his hard work and a positive attitude are paying off.

’Things are going well but we’ve just struggled away from home of late. However, we got a good point away at unbeaten San Antonio on Saturday.

’It was good to make my debut recently. I feel I worked hard and kept a positive attitude even when things were not going my way.

’I’m definitely improving as a player. The depth of players at the club is fantastic and we are always looking at videos and analysing our performances and then working on it in the next sessions, so no stone is left unturned.

’The team is playing well and, although we have not got the points we deserve in the last few games, that will come eventually.’

As a result of his extended run in the team at Swope Park, the centre-back was forced to pull out of the Ellan Vannin squad for the ConIFA’s European Football Cup which is currently taking place in Northern Cyprus (see below).

Doyle had originally been given permission to fly out from America to join up with Chris Bass Sr’s squad, but feels he need to stay put and cement his place in the Swope team.

’It was tough to pull out of the Ellan Vannin squad because you always want to play and be involved.

’However, the club was very short-handed with injuries and people going away so it was better that I stayed and keep playing as well as I can here.

’The competition is massive at the club so I just need to keep playing as well as I can and stay in the team.

’I want to wish the lads all of the best for the tournament and I will play for Ellan Vannin again one day I’m sure.’
