There’s a raft of new faces in the latest installment of Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week.
The midway point of the 2018-19 season is fast approaching but the debutants continue to come thick and fast in the hypothetical XI.
By contrast though, John McCallum has racked up his fifth Referee of the Week appearance of the campaign already after he produced a typically strong performance in the middle of the St George’s v Peel clash at Glencrutchery Road.
Claiming the goalkeeping honours this week is Laxey’s Sean Jackson who, in tough conditions at Glen Road, pulled off several impressive saves to keep his side in with a chance of claiming a point at home to relegation rivals St John’s.
The latter side eventually snatched a dramatic 2-1 win thanks to Cian Brock’s injury-time winner against his former club and also impressing in the match was Aaron Babb.
The young defender was in fine fettle as he helped thwart the Laxey attack and was key in helping the Saints claim a potentially big three points.
Also slotting in at the back in the latest Team of the Week are Alex Maitland, Matthew Woods and Stephen Riding.
Maitland was in good form for Rushen United as the Spaniards cruised to victory at home to relegation battlers Marown, a match in which captain Riding excelled as he netted twice for Liam Cowin’s men.
Woods was also on the scoresheet as Peel claimed that big win away at champions St George’s, the versatile No6 grabbing the second of his side’s three goals in their 3-2 victory at Glencrutchery Road.
The three-man midfield is made up of Corinthians duo Tom Callister and Fraser Vaughan as well as St John’s winger Liam Harrison.
Callister and Vaughan were in typically fine form for the Whites as they comfortably saw off the spirited challenge of Castletown at Ballafletcher, bossing the midfield against the Mets in tricky conditions, with Callister even scoring a goal wearing manager Danny McMahon’s boots after turning up without his own!
Harrison delivered a man of the match performance for St John’s at Glen Road, setting up the equaliser as the Saints came from behind to record their third win of the season.
Grabbing the winner in that match was the aforementioned Brock who forms part of a three-pronged attack alongside Josh Kelly and Rhys Oates.
Kelly was in top form as he grabbed a brace for Rushen in their convincing win over Marown, while Oates was the star of the show as he helped end Peel’s four-year wait for a league win at St George’s.
