Manx football’s big fixture backlog grew by another 18 games on Saturday afternoon as the wet weather resulted in another spate of call offs because of water-logged pitches.

Only two games went ahead in the end, St Mary’s beating Rushen United 3-1 on the artificial surface of the Bowl and RYCOB triumphing over Governor’s Athletic in Combi Two.

The former was a rearranged fixture from the first half of the season meaning the points accrued from out count toward Railway Cup.

Prior to kick-off Rushen were firmly in the mix for this and looked to be on course to collect three points for their qualification cause when Mike Williams slammed home Josh Kelly’s low cross in the 56th minute.

However, under player-manager Alex Harrison St Mary’s have improved in recent weeks and soon drew level when full-back Tommy Johnson arrowed in a low shot from distance.

Saints’ talisman Steven Priestnal then nudged his side in front with a tremendous curling finish from the edge of the area.

Priestnal wrapped up the points in the 90th minute when he slotted in a second from the penalty spot after referee Andy Lodge adjudged that Rushen skipper Aaron Hawley had handled Jordan Cooper’s shot in the box.

Youthie remain on course to lift the Combination Two title after they picked up a 14th win in 15 games. The northerners’ second string beat Governor’s 6-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Jason Smith and other goals from Martyn Murphy, Marty Boyce and Brad Birchall.
