The latest Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week FA Cup special features a trio of players from JCK Division Two.
The so-called lesser sides gave an excellent account of themselves last Saturday as Foxdale and Douglas Athletic shone in the semi-finals of the Friends Provident International-sponsored competition.
Foxdale were within seconds of forcing extra-time against defending champions Peel before Tom Wood netted a last-gasp injury-time 2-1 winner for the westerners.
As such, the Billy Goat Park outfit have no fewer than three players in the latest Team of the Week selection.
Stuart Fayle, who was named Player of the Round earlier in the tournament, produced another superb performance in between the sticks for Foxdale, pulling off several top saves to frustrate the Sunset City side.
In front of him is a three-man defence, two of which are made up of his team-mates, namely Scott Kermeen and Anthony Corkill.
The latter was a rock in the heart of their defence as they kept Peel at bay for much of the game, while Kermeen stole the show when he stunned the hosts by opening the scoring in the 10th minute to give Dale hopes of a famous upset against their more illustrious opponents.
Completing the back three is Douglas Athletic’s bearded wonder Daniel Pennington who, despite being on the losing side against Grand Slam chasers St George’s, impressed at the back for the Pinks and also set up his team’s consolation goal.
The five-man midfield is made up of players all from Geordies and Peel, led by Chris Bass Jr who continues to enjoy a sublime season for St George’s as they chase another cleansweep of Manx football.
The winger got his name on the scoresheet with his side’s fourth goal against the spirited Pinks at Glencrutchery Road. Also getting in on the act in that game was Joey Morling who nodded home is side’s fifth, while Frank Jones produced another typical all-action display in the heart of midfield to earn his place in Team of the Week.
Completing the central quintet are two Peel players in the shape of Matthew Woods and Tom Wood.
Woods enjoyed a lively game on the wing for the westerners and, following a second-half tactical switch, was integral in Peel’s late push for an equaliser and subsequent winner.
That winning goal came via the trusty left foot of Tom Wood who sparked wild scenes and relief amongst the Peel faithful when he lashed home in dramatic fashion in the 93rd minute of Saturday’s game.
The man who supplied the cross for that goal, Ashley Webster, is also rewarded with a place in the latest hypothetical XI as, not only did he grab that assist, but he also scored the vital equaliser with what was his 100th goal for the club in just 76 starts.
Slotting in alongside Webster is his island team-mate Ciaran McNulty who led the line with typical gusto and poise for St George’s during their aforementioned 5-1 victory at home to Douglas Athletic, scoring the opening goal for the Saints as they quest for yet more silverware.
Claiming the refereeing honours this week is James Turpin who enjoyed a fine game with the whistle during the memorable clash between Peel and Foxdale at the Station Fields.
