The Canada Life Premier League is back and that means a return to ’action’ for the Isle of Man Newspapers Team of the Week.
Made up of players that caught the eye during Saturday’s six top-flight games, eight clubs are represented in the maiden hypothetical XI of the 2017-18 campaign.
Starting at the back, Douglas Athletic keeper Matty Quirk lands the coveted number one jersey after an impressive performance in the Pinks’ slender 1-0 defeat at the hands of Corinthians.
The latter were the only CLPL side to claim a clean sheet on the opening weekend and the Whites’ defender Tom Smith makes it into the side’s back-three.
Smith also marked his league debut after a summer switch from Laxey with a goal to continue the Charity Shield winners’ good start to the season.
Slotting in alongside Smith are Rushen’s Aaron Hawley and St Mary’s Tom Johnson.
Hawley played a key role as the Spaniards managed to quell some sustained periods of Peel pressure and edge past their Old Firm rivals 3-2 at Croit Lowey.
A new name to Team of the Week, left-back Johnson’s performance caught the eye in as the Saints overcame Colby 5-1 at the Bowl.
The TotW midfield is full of goals, the quartet netting six between them.
Ramsey’s Nick White capped a dynamic performance in the northerners’ engine room with a good header as the Ballacloan side beat Douglas Royal 4-1.
Laxey’s Joe Walters was also a driving force in his side’s 6-3 victory over Braddan, the youngster nabbing a goal as the Miners started new manager Paul Callow’s tenure with a win.
Peel’s Daniel Bell was unlucky to find himself on the losing side as the he grabbed a brace as the Sunset City were downed 3-2 by Rushen.
Completing the midfield line-up is St George’s Ciaran McNulty, the Geordies man netting two goals to take his tally to 292 Pemier League goals after revelling in a slightly deeper role than usual.
The side’s three-man attack were equally as potent in front of goal netting nine between them.
Ramsey’s Dominic Parish was man of the match as he put Royal to the sword with two goals in his side’s 4-1 victory.
Steven Priestnal took his tally to 280 Premier League goals with a four-goal haul, including two from the penalty spot, as the Saints won 5-1.
However, grabbing the inaugural player of the day mantle is Furo Davies.
The St George’s man netted a hat-trick and set up another goal as the reigning champions came from two goals down to beat a plucky St John’s at Mullen-e-Cloie.
The first referee of the week honours of the season goes to Andy Lodge who enjoyed a good game in the middle as Laxey beat Braddan.
