The 15th installment of this season’s Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week features another three debutants.
St John’s gave their Premier League survival hopes a huge boost by beating western rivals Peel thanks to a dramatic last-gasp 1-0 at Mullen-e-Cloie.
Keeping a clean sheet for the Saints in that match was goalkeeper James Rice who impressed Eric Clague’s player ratings panel with a series of fine saves to earn his place in the latest hypothetical XI.
Lining up in front of Rice in a four-man defence is a quartet of players who, between them, have now earned no fewer than 15 TotW appearances already this season.
The defenders in question are Ayre United’s Jamie Callister, Marown’s Matty McQuarrie, Adam Cooil of Rushen United and Laxey’s David Reynolds.
Callister has been one of the Tangerines standout performers thus far in the 2020-21 campaign and excelled against runaway league leaders Corinthians at Ballafletcher, restricting the Whites to three goals as the northerners pushed them all the way.
Aside from Corinthians, Marown are the form team in the Premier League at the moment and racked up their fourth successive win when beating Douglas Royal 6-1 on Saturday. Claiming two of those goals was McQuarrie to earn his third TotW call-up of the season.
Also scoring six goals at the weekend were Rushen for whom Cooil starred at the back as the Spaniards saw off the challenge of Douglas Athletic 6-0, while Reynolds continued his superb start to the campaign with yet another impressive performance for Laxey during their 3-1 win over champions St Mary’s.
McQuarrie wasn’t the only Marown player to impress against Royal, with captain Cameron Avery helping himself to a rare hat-trick for the Crosby outfit to earn his place in a more advanced midfield role in TotW, as well as being named the player of the day for his efforts.
Joining him in a midfield three are Joey Morling of St George’s and Johnny Shields of Ayre.
The latter man impressed for the northerners during their aforementioned hard-fought defeat against Corinthians, while Morling continued his fine recent form by playing a key role in Geordies’ 4-1 victory over Ramsey at Glencrutchery Road.
Stealing the show for the former Grand Slam winners though was Ciaran McNulty who proved the difference for the Saints with a well-taken hat-trick.
Therefore, he earns his place in a three-man attack alongside Rushen United’s Aaron Hawley and Laxey’s Jordan Cooper.
The latter man was on the scoresheet against his former side as the Miners inflicted a second successive 3-1 defeat on champions St Mary’s, while Hawley climbed off the bench to net a 22-minute hat-trick for the Spaniards in their match against Athletic at Croit Lowey.
