Isle of Man Football Association’s men’s representative side registered an impressive 4-0 victory over Bangor City FC at the Bowl on Saturday.

It was the manner in which the Manx team claimed victory that was particularly pleasing, playing with verve and enterprise against the Welsh Premier League outfit.

After drawing blanks in their two previous summer friendly outings against Altrincham and Connah’s Quaye, the Isle of Man only took six minutes to open their account.

Lee Gale’s corner was met by Furo Davies’s far-post header who nodded across goal for Frank Jones to head into the top left corner.

Chances continued for the home side who had several shots off target while the visitors, buoyed by their vociferous support, also went close on a couple of occasions.

The mounting Manx pressure resulted in a second goal before half-time. It was a delightful counter-attacking move, winning possession on one side of the pitch and only taking 14 seconds to find the back of the net.

Tom Wood instigated the move before Stephen Whitley raced to the other end of the field and passed to the overlapping Wood who laid the ball off to the advancing Gale to drill home.

After the break, Davies found the net but it was ruled out for offside.

However, on 51 minutes the Manx got their third when Davies collected a throw-in on the left and the striker muscled his way past several defenders before squaring across goal for Whitley to tap into an empty net at the far post.

The hosts went close again soon after, Rhys Oates having a low, testing shot that was denied by an outstretched arm.

Just before the hour mark, the Isle of Man brought on five substitutes at once. Chances continued for both sides and Manx goalkeeper Matthew Quirk had to be alert to pull off two impressive saves and deny the Welsh side a way back into the contest.

The hosts got their fourth on 81 minutes following another well-worked move.

Matthew Skillicorn passed to Joey Morling on the right who in turn placed a pin-point cross for the advancing Jones to direct a header home from close range and complete a good day at the office for the Isle of Man.
