Isle of Man Football Association is hoping to complete the 2020-21 season by the end of next month.
With the sport currently on hold because of the ongoing coronavirus restrictions during the latest circuit-breaker lockdown, there had been fears that the senior men’s season could be declared null and void, much like the 2019-20 campaign was this time last year.
But Isle of Man FA president Tony Mepham has confirmed that the association is confident the full programme of Premier League, Division Two, Combination One and Combination Two fixtures can successfully be completed this time around.
’We’re looking to recommence the league as soon as possible,’ he said at the weekend.
’Once the government gives the all clear, we’re going to go for it and try and get the league completed, if we can, by the end of May.
’If you look through the fixtures, a lot of clubs have about seven matches to play and normally at this time of year we’re playing twice a week on Saturday afternoon and a Tuesday or Wednesday evening.
’So we will do that and hopefully we’ll get the backlog cleared.’
The association is currently in talks with clubs regarding the possibility of extending the season into June, allowing for any further delays to league games as well as some of the outstanding cup competitions to be played.
