The Isle of Man FA representative side produced another stirring comeback against Liverpool County in the FA Inter-League Cup at the Bowl on Saturday evening.
The Men infamously came from 3-0 down to defeat the Merseysiders 5-3 when the sides last met in February 2012 and the Manx side found themselves 2-0 down after only 18 minutes.
A Ciaran McNulty strike reduced the arrears but the visitors soon restored their two-goal deficit via the penalty spot, however Daniel Bell’s glancing header ensured the island only trailed by a single goal at the interval.
After the restart the home side pushed for an equaliser but a sublime free-kick by Liverpool left-back Joel Burns into the top right corner of the net put the away side 4-2 up and left the Manx staring down the barrel of elimination.
Despite the scoreline, the Isle of Man remained undeterred and controlled proceedings as they attempted to muster a spirited response and substitute Furo Davies bundled the ball into the net following an aerial challenge with the visiting goalkeeper to make it 4-3.
Once again though, the Manx came undone in defence and gifted the Merseysiders a penalty which could’ve put the game beyond the island’s reach, only for Isle of Man keeper Sam Holliday to pull off a superb save to palm away the spot-kick.
It proved to be a pivotal moment as the visitors’ heads dropped and they defended deeper and deeper as the clock counted down to the 90-minute mark.
Then, just when it looked like Liverpool would hold on for victory, the Isle of Man grabbed a late equaliser when Davies fired home in the 89th minute to force 30 minutes of extra-time.
Buoyed by that late leveller, the hosts carried their momentum into the additional half an hour and duly took the lead for the first time in the game when Sean Quaye bundled the ball in after Frank Jones’s initial effort had supposedly been cleared off the line.
The game continued in much the same vein after half-time in extra-time and it wasn’t long before they put one foot in the next round thanks to Davies who burst past a defender and smashed an unstoppable shot past the keeper to complete his hat-trick.
There was still time for more brilliance when fellow sub Sam Caine got his name on the scoresheet with a superb solo, mazy run through the Liverpool defence before firing home to complete a dramatic 7-4 victory for the Isle of Man.
